How to cure Acne

How to cure Acne

Acne vulgaris, generally referred to as acne, is a common skin condition that affects oil glands found in hair follicles. The term acne is derived from the Greek word that means ‘a high point’. In Greek, the word was originally spelled ‘akme’. The letters changed in 1835 when it was misspelled, the letter ’m’ being replaced by an ‘n’. During puberty, the glands that produce sebum oil begin actively functioning. Testosterone, a male hormone present in men and women, stimulates the oil glands. An over production of sebum, the natural oil produced to maintain skin moisture, can cause skin pores to become clogged. If there are bacteria in the pores, it gets trapped if the pores become clogged with oil, causing an acne pustule. Acne is not harmful and does carry side effects that can cause other health problems.

The skin has little holes in it called pores. Pores are connected to oil glands through follicles. The sebum produced by the sebaceous glands is responsible for the transport of dead skin cells to the outer layer of the skin. Tiny hairs grow out of the follicles and when they become blocked, a pimple forms due to buildup of sebum.

For most people experiencing acne breakouts, pimples can form on the neck, back, shoulders, chest and face. When sebum collects in a pore, it does with the tiny hair attached to the follicle associated with that particular pore. The hair, sebum and skin cells cause the formation of a plug. Bacteria in the pore grow due to the dead skin cells and when it does, an acne pustule forms. The swelling you experience is when the formation of the plug is complete. Upon breakdown of the plug, the development of a pimple begins.

Researchers and scientist at the Washington University School of Medicine have recently discovered strains that control how frequent or how severe an acne pustule becomes. While many strains are bad, there are some that are beneficial for the skin and help to prevent the formation of acne pustules.

Types Of Pimples

  • Papules- Small, pinkish bumps that are visible on the skin’s surface.
  • Blackheads- Black and generally easy to see on the skin’s surface. Because blackheads are not created by dirt, you cannot wash them off or scrub them out of the pores.
  • Whiteheads- Small, skin inflammation found underneath the skin
  • Nobules- Large, developed pimples that are deep in the skin. Nobules are painful to the touch.
  • Cysts- Generally the most common form of acne that causes scars, cysts can be painful and pus-filled.
  • Pustules- Easy to see on the skin’s surface and filled with pus.

Acne Causes

While the causes have not been found, researchers and medical professionals feel that testosterone, an androgen hormone, is primarily the culprit behind breakouts. During adolescence, androgen hormones become active. Hormone activity creates stimulation and enlargement of the sebaceous oil glands, thus the reason you may wake up with an oily face in the mornings when you enter your early teens. When too much oil is produced, the pores of the skin become compromised, making it easy for bacteria to find its way into them. The bacteria trapped in sebum oil causes an inflammatory reaction that causes a pimple. No one is exempt from acne, no matter what ethnic group you belong to. Sadly, acne starting in the teen years does as self and esteem and confidence is so vital. Teens with acne issues can become self-conscious and experience dents to their self-esteem.

When the skin cell structure is experiencing a healthy balance, the occurrence of breakouts is lessened. Irritation can create the perfect environment for the occurrence of acne as well. Scrubbing your face too hard, sunburn, dry skin issues and shaving are examples of ways your skin can become irritated. Using oily cosmetics is another way you can create clogged pores. Bacteria are easily attracted to irritated skin pores because the pores become fragile and more susceptible to bacterial infiltration. Protecting your skin from irritation can help you reduce the risk of acne breakouts, though it not a cure and will not completely prevent the occurrence of pimples.

Acne is thought by some experts to be a genetic issue. Medications you take that contain lithium or androgen hormones can also cause acne to occur or become worse. The hormonal fluctuations experienced during pregnancy and menstrual cycles can also cause acne breakouts. In recent studies, researchers may have also found a link between acne and diets with high amounts of dairy products and glycemic index food choices.

Facts About Rare Causes Of Acne Breakouts

Many myths surround acne and how some things may make the occurrences of breakouts worse. However, for some women and girls, the overproduction of male hormones in their bodies due to specific disease has been found to cause severe acne. The disease polycystic ovary syndrome directly influences the overproduction of male hormones being manufactured in the adrenal gland and ovaries. Hirsutism, a condition when a female grows too much hair on their bodies, is also caused by the overproduction of male hormones.

Chemical exposure can be the cause of some rare outbreaks of acne. The person that has never had any issues with acne can experience severe breakouts when exposed to halogenated hydrocarbons, common chemicals used in the manufacturing environment. Halogenated hydrocarbons can be found in many products like fire extinguishers and flame retardant fabrics as well.

Factors That Increase The Risk Of Acne Breakouts

  • Hormonal fluctuations can increase the risk of experiencing acne breakouts. Fluctuations in hormone levels commonly occur in:
  • Women that are pregnant
  • Girls and women in the days before the start of their monthly menstrual cycle
  • Teens experiencing puberty
  • People prescribed medications like lithium, corticosteroids, phenytoin for epilepsy, steroidal cream  and androgens
  • People that use greasy cosmetics or skin care products
  • People with a history of acne in their family
  • Skin experiencing irritation due to friction and pressure
  • People experiencing great levels of stress. Stress is not a root cause of acne, but acne can worsen if you are ender too much emotional or physical pressure for too long.

Factors That Worsen Acne

  • Monthly Menstrual Cycles: many women and girls experience acne breakouts in the days before their menstrual cycle each month. Due to so many women and girls craving chocolate during their cycle, many people wonder about chocolate being the reason for the breakouts. However, the hormonal fluctuation that occurs during menstruation is the reason for acne.
  • Stress And Nervousness Related To Anxiety: When you are experiencing high levels of mental stress, some hormones, primarily adrenaline and cortisol, kick into overdrive creating fluctuations that can increase the risk of acne breakouts. While many people binge eat when they become stressed, you should know experts report binging is not the reason you may have acne. Hormone imbalances is the reason stress may increase acne.
  • Living in areas of high humidity and heat can help to worsen acne due to sweating. Sweating a lot can also help to clog pores.
  • Using oily cosmetics can make acne worse. However, other skin care products like suntan lotion and moisturizing lotions can as well. Choosing natural, hypo-allerginic products is best to prevent acne flare ups.
  • Products for the hair that are greasy can also contribute to your acne problem.
  • Picking at pimples or squeezing them can cause serious, permanent damage to the skin pores. Avoid picking at your skin to avoid scarring.
  • Birth control pills containing only progestogen can cause acne to be worse.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing. The friction caused by garments and accessories like headbands and bra straps can create acne pustules.
  • Anabolic steroids like the ones used illegally for bodybuilding can make acne worse.

Most people automatically assume stress is related to emotional pressure. However, both mental and physical stress can create conditions in your body that lead to acne breakouts. Many of the pores in everyone’s skin are clogged without being visible. When you are stressed, the pores in the skin experience an inflammatory response that causes cellular breakdown. When pores are weakened, pathways are made for bacteria to enter, causing redness, swelling and the formation of pus you see on a pimple.

Too much stress causes the adrenal gland to produce greater amounts of androgen hormones. Women should know their adrenal glands are responsible for male hormones, androgens, more so than men. For this reason, most women experience greater outbreaks of acne due to high stress.

Seeking a healthy, effective treatment for your acne is important to avoid feeling guilty over the stress that could have helped to cause it. In fact, worrying over your appearance with acne can create greater levels stress. Approach your acne breakouts with determination and you will see a difference in the health not only your skin, but in how you feel overall. Learning to handle stress can be helpful for several conditions, acne being one of them.

Tips For Handling Stress

Exercise Programs

Exercising on a regular basis can do wonders for your total health, including the relief of stress. In fact, many health professionals recommend exercise over some drugs prescribed for anxiety. During exercise, a great supply of oxygen makes it to the brain, the reason why you may experience a euphoric feeling right after a workout. Maintain regular exercise three times a week can make a huge difference in your stress levels. Be sure to start out slow and work your way into more vigorous workouts to prevent injury and muscle soreness.

Meditation And Taking Out Time For You

Making the time to meditate can have several benefits towards your good health. Choosing a quiet place away for sitting and relaxing can help you to reduce stress. Just spending a few minutes each morning and evening taking deep breathes and relaxing can help you deal with the pressures of everyday life and help you to have skin free from acne as well.

Acne Is A Common Skin Problem Experienced By Millions

Three quarters of kids entering into adolescence will experience acne at some time or another. Even though acne usually strikes adolescents, many people well into their forties and fifties also experience acne breakouts. No race is exempt from acne as well. One study reported that seventeen million people in the United States have had acne at some time in their lives. Younger men seem to have longer lasting issue with acne. Experts feel the reason young men have greater periods of acne is due to the greater levels of testosterone in their bodies.

Women And Acne

Many young women and men will have the occasional pimple. Some studies have shown that young men experience more severe forms of acne. Women and girls generally have troubling pimples only around the time of their menstrual cycles. For many women, acne issues fade away as they grow older. However, some women never have trouble with acne until they reach their thirties and forties. Because of the stigmas and stereotyping surrounding the female image, many women find acne deeply upsetting. The destruction acne breakouts can cause to a woman’s self-esteem can be devastating, especially if acne pustules are severe. Many women experience the side effects of depression and anxiety because of dents in their self-esteem and confidence. Women can experience acne breakouts because of the cosmetics they use daily. The woman that has a family history of acne can also be at greater risk of developing it. The hormone changes that occur in the female body, especially during child bearing years, can cause acne issues. Pregnancy and menstruation also trigger acne breakouts. Discussing your treatment options with your health care provider can help you to treat and prevent acne.

Acne Treatments

For most people, using an over the counter-OTC- topical medication can help to heal the occasional pimple. Most OTC medications for acne include some of these ingredients:

Resorcinol {extravote 1}

A crystalline phenol used in treatments of eczema psoriasis and dandruff, Resorcinol can also help to reduce acne breakouts. Resorcinol works by destroying blackheads and whiteheads.

Accutane –Isotretinoin {extravote acne_treatments_2}

Given orally for fifteen to twenty weeks, Accutane(isotretinoin), is generally used for severe cystic acne occurring in more than one region of the body. Around 60 to 66% of persons taking Accutane for severe acne experience long term remission of breakouts. However, Accutane does carry serious side effects that include birth defects. Patients taking Accutane do so under close supervision of a medical professional. People that have acne issues that do not respond to other treatments are also candidates for Accutane.

Benzoyl Peroxide {extravote acne_treatments_3}

An effective remedy for acne used since the thirties, benzoyl peroxide is one of the few treatments that actually deliver oxygen deep into the skin pores. Bacteria that sustain acne pustules cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. For this reason, benzoyl peroxide helps to eliminate up to 99% of bacteria living in the pores of the skin, thus greatly reducing the risk of acne development. Maintaining a regular schedule of daily use 2.5% benzoyl peroxide preparation is essential for it to be effective. Most people remain on scheduled use of benzoyl peroxide until their acne fades away on its own.

Salicylic Acid {extravote acne_treatments_4}

Used in dandruff shampoos and aspirin, salicylic acid is classified as an antifungal and anti-inflammatory ingredient that supports healthy skin cell growth. Salicylic acid has been found to greatly reduce skin cell shedding and beneficial for the removal of dead skin cells attached to follicle walls. Salicylic acid also reduces epidermal skin cell shedding, helping to reduce the number of dead skin cells that build up in the pores and follicles.

Sulfur {extravote acne_treatments_5}

Even though sulfur has been for thousands of years as an effective remedy for skin conditions like eczema, acne and psoriasis, scientists and researchers still do not know exactly how it heals. However, the effectiveness of sulfur might be due its oxidizing transformation into sulfuric acid, giving it strong antibacterial properties.

Retin-A {extravote acne_treatments_6}

Containing the acid form of Vitamin A (all-trans retinoic acid), tretinoin, Retin-A is effective for unblocking skin pores. Tretinoin is also a part of treatments for patients suffering with acute promyelocytic leukemia as well. Retin-A has been found to have effective anti-aging benefits as well as being a useful chemical peel.

Azelaic Acid {extravote acne_treatments_1}

Found in barley, wheat and rye, azelaic acid promotes stronger follicle cells, reduces over production of sebum oil and lowers the growth of bacteria. Azelaic acid provides anti-inflammatory benefits that help to reduce the damage caused by free radical molecules as well. Darker skinned patients can benefit greatly using azelaic acid for helping to reduce dark areas, referred to as melisma, on the skin left behind by acne.

Interlesional Corticosteroid Injections {extravote acne_treatments_7}

Ruptured acne cysts occur when the cyst experience great inflammation, being the cause of severe scarring in many cases. Injecting diluted corticosteroid medication into the cysts can help to reduce the risk of rupture. Cysts treated with this injected corticosteroids will fade quickly and heal completely.

Antibiotics Given Orally {extravote acne_treatments_8}

Propionibacterium acnes, an aerotolerant anaerobic type bacterium, live on the skin. Propionibacterium acnes are rapid multipliers and are great contributing factors in blocked pores that cause acne. Oral antibiotics are usually prescribed for reducing Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. However, patients cannot remain on the same type of antibiotic for longer than six months due to the bacteria building up immunity. Most medical professionals choose broad spectrum antibiotics for gaining the most benefit in the reduction of bacteria that causes acne.

Contraceptives Taken Orally {extravote acne_treatments_9}

Many women are given oral contraceptives for treating acne. Some contraceptives work by suppressing overactive glands. Oral contraceptives are generally given as term treatment for acne. However, women that smoke, have blood clotting issues, have a history of headaches, particularly migraines or are over the age of thirty five should be sure to discuss oral contraceptives with their doctor before taking them.

Topical Treatments {extravote acne_treatments_10}

Topical antimicrobial gels and creams are used to slow down Propionibacterium acnes bacteria in the same way as oral antibiotics. Microbial topical medications are prescribed to patients with moderate to severe forms of acne. Clindamycin, sodium sulfacetamide and erythromycin are some common topical antimicrobial medications.

Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical retinoid medication for your acne problem. Retinoid is a component of Vitamin A and are commonly prescribed for acne because it works by unclogging pores. The development of blackheads and whiteheads is diminished by retinoid topical medications. Tretinoin, tazarotene and adapalene are some of the most commonly prescribed topical retinoid medications.

Several over the counter medications are available for the treatment of acne. You can choose from medicated pads, soaps, creams and gels. Bear in mind gels are usually alcohol based and have a tendency to dry skin. Some people also experience irritation, redness and peeling. Those people with oily skin fare better using alcohol based topical acne medications. Persons with sensitive skin may experience gentler results using creams or lotions. Always begin your treatment using the lowest strength topical medication. If side effects of irritation and peeling do not go away after continued use, stop using the medication you chose and see your dermatologist for advice.

Research has found new evidence of a unique virus that lives on the skin. Termed bacteriophages, this virus lives off the bacteria that cause acne. Bacteriophages do not feed on human cells, but on bacteria instead. More research will prove whether this virus can be used to combat acne breakouts in a more effective way than current available treatments.

Severe Acne Treatments

If you have tried several over the counter acne medication without results and your acne has worsened, you should seek the medical attention of a dermatologist. Your doctor may prescribe some of the medication already mentioned in this article or he or she may prescribe a combination of above mentioned treatments. Tetracycline and erythromycin are commonly prescribed antibiotics that may be used in conjunction with some topical medications. However, some sever cases are treated with alpha hydroxy acid. Alpha hydroxy acid can be found in many skin care products. Care should be taken about exposure to UV rays, particularly sunlight, when using any product containing alpha hydroxy acid because it increases the skin’s sensitivity.

Dermatology And Spa Treatments

Many people choose green clay as a cleansing mask because it is provide gentle, yet effective results that are immediate and benefits can last up to three days. Using a clay mask at least three times weekly in the evenings before you go to bed is best for experiencing the greatest benefits. You can make your clay mask at home using two to three tablespoons of chamomile and a drop of essential lemon oil to powdered clay. Powdered clay mix is available at many pharmacies. Mix in a bowl with enough water to make the desired consistency for a mask. You can use this clay mask on the face and neck. When clay dries, gently wash it off with warm water.

Most spas offer facials that incorporate deep skin cleansers, acne reducing extraction tools and masks. Some people may worry about choosing an esthetician for the treatment they may need for acne. If you have trepidations, visiting a qualified dermatologist is best for your comfort and peace of mind.

Facial Peels

When you have a facial peel, a specially formulated acid based gel is generally used that effectively dissolves bacteria and dead skin cells. Having facial peels done on a regular schedule in addition to your normal skin care routine can greatly reduce acne breakouts.

A procedure that uses an abrasive solution to ‘sand’ the surface of the skin, microdermabrasion can help to reduce acne when done once weekly consecutively for a few months. Your dermatologist may use a special solution during microdermabrasion or a specialized technique that uses vibrations to remove dead skin cells and associated skin bacteria.

Laser Treatments

While many patients report experiencing pain during laser treatments for acne, you should know that laser light can reduce the occurrence of acne pustules by fifty percent. Lasers send bright lights into the pores of the skin for effectively destroying the glands that are producing too much sebum oil.

Light Treatments

Less painful and invasive than laser treatments, light treatments are procedures using a wand that projects different colors of light for destroying acne causing bacteria. Blue, red and green light has been found to effectively reduce acne through the destruction of certain bacteria. Learn more about whether light treatments are an option for your acne treatment by talking to your dermatologist.

Cryotherapy, also called cryosurgery, involves the application of liquid nitrogen to the skin. Liquid nitrogen ‘freezes’ the areas it applied on, causing peeling in most cases. Cryotherapy has been used effectively in the treatment of acne for several years and is always used in a complimentary manner to other treatments like creams and gels. Most patients have this procedure done without the use of anesthesia, a benefit for many people with medical issues that can be affected by the respiratory depression associated with anesthetic drugs. Your dermatologist can help you make the right choices about the options you have for cryotherapy procedures.

Acne Fighting Foods

The adage stating ‘you are what you eat’ is truer than you may realize, especially when it comes to your skin. In the event you are experiencing a vitamin or mineral deficiency, your skin will be the first place you see signs. a poor, unbalanced diet can rob the skin cell structure of the nutrients it needs for remaining healthy.  For making an improvement in the appearance and health of your skin, start by avoiding processed foods that contain additives and preservatives. Choosing organic foods is best for helping you avoid the chemicals in processed foods that can produce long term, harmful side effects. Eating foods that will provide healthy fats is essential for proper body functioning.

Your dermatologist can perform a blood test that can reveal several details about your level of nutrition. Your doctor may look for deficiencies in zinc, Vitamin A and imbalanced hormone levels. You may also have tests done for determining whether or not your thyroid is functioning properly as well.

Some people experience acne breakouts due to an allergic reaction. In most cases, food allergens are the culprit of allergy related acne. Talk to your dermatologist about the foods you may be eating that could cause poor absorption of nutrients, thus leading to deficiencies that cause acne.

Effective Herbal Acne Remedies

Studies about herbal acne treatments reveal that some herbs are more effective for acne than the ingredient benzoyl peroxide found in many popular topical acne medications. While further clinical research is needed for herbal acne treatments, evidence has already been produced proving thyme tincture as being greater in antiseptic properties than benzoyl peroxide. Herbal tincture is created by soaking herbs in alcohol for several weeks. During the soaking process, potent compounds are released from the herb. Researchers performed tests proving the effects of the tincture on acne came from the herb and not the alcohol content. The discovery of herbal acne remedies is great news because of the side effects associated with popular ingredients like benzoyl peroxide.

Foods Found To Aggravate Acne

Some foods have been found to cause greater problems with acne, especially if you are already experiencing acne breakouts. Dairy products that contain hormones, chocolate, some meats and deep fried foods can create worsening acne conditions. However, some food choices have found to decrease the occurrence through excellent nutritional support.

Vitamin A

Used as a main ingredient in some prescription medications for acne, Vitamin A supports skin regeneration and it does not prevent the healthy dispersion of fats and proteins. Spinach, broccoli, carrots and salmon are great sources of Vitamin A. Avoid consuming high amounts of Vitamin A because doing so can produce toxic side effects.

Research shows that most acne sufferers have low levels of zinc. Zinc promotes an environment in the skin that inhibits bacterial growth. Zinc helps to decrease the inflammation associated with acne by reducing acne causing bacteria. Studies have shown that six percent of the body’s entire levels of zinc are in the skin. Supplementing with up to 50mg of zinc daily can help to reduce acne breakouts. Choosing zinc gluconate supplements is wise due to a greater bio-availability over zinc sulfate supplements. Food choices that contain zinc include wheat germ, turkey and almonds.

Vitamin C And E

Both Vitamins C and E are high in antioxidant properties. While supplementing with these vitamins, it is recommended to include both for experiencing greater antioxidant protection. Acne breakouts are the direct result of free radical damage. Free radical molecules are responsible for the oxidation process and are highly attracted to irritated skin. Providing your system with the highest levels of antioxidant protection is important to help decrease the occurrence of acne. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. Tomatoes are also a great source of Vitamin C. Walnuts, leafy, green vegetables, avocados, sunflowers seeds, olive oil and sweet potatoes are all contain high levels of Vitamin E.

High in antioxidants, selenium has been found to work in synergy with Vitamin E towards beneficial healing for acne. Eggs, brown rice, wheat germ, garlic and almonds are good sources of selenium.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit positive inflammatory responses in the body, particularly in glomerular endothelial cells. Omega-3 fatty acids also promote skin cell regeneration as well. While most people eat foods high in Omega-6 fatty acids, many people do not get enough omega-3. Omega-6 fatty acids promote the regulation of inflammation found in the body while omega-3 fatty acids actually reduce the production of cytokine leukotriene B4 inflammatory molecules. Acne is partially caused by inflammatory response in the body, thus leading researchers to believe that omega-3 fatty acids can help to also reduce acne breakouts. Another great benefit of omega-3 fatty acids is the regulation of IGF-1, an insulin-like growth factor.IGF-1 control can help slow down high levels of unnecessary skin cells.  Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in vegetable oils, flax and chia seeds, fish, fish oils and hemp.

Water is essential for life. Without healthy hydration, the body cannot effectively filter toxins out nor can organ functioning take place at optimum health. The health of the skin depends on hydration for proper metabolism of nutrients to occur. While there is not a recommended amount of daily water consumption, drinking as much as you can is always good. Water is important for healthy functioning of the skin cell structure. Dehydration in the skin cell structure promotes the perfect environment for free radical damage, so making sure you maintain proper hydration is important for your skin to remain health and acne free.

Witch Hazel

Because of its strong antiseptic and astringent properties, witch hazel has been touted as being an excellent pre minimizer and bacteria reducing facial toner. In fact, many people claim instant results in the reduction of redness associated with acne.

Burdock root has been used for thousands of years for a variety of ailments. However, the important benefit to consider if you are an acne sufferer is burdock’s blood purification properties. Purifying the blood means less toxins and harmful bacteria reaching the skin cell structure, thus lessening the risk of acne breakouts. Most practitioners recommend making a tea out of burdock root for being able to experience its many health benefits. Burdock has been found to also help lower blood sugar levels as well. Herbalists recommend a dosage of 2-4 ml of burdock root tincture each day or 1.5g capsule supplementation three times a day. Women that are pregnant should not supplement with burdock root due to the effect this herb has on the uterus.

During WWII, Russian soldiers maintained higher immunity against disease and similar maladies by drinking a tonic made out of lemon powder. Researchers and botanists have discovered the application of lemon juice on the skin is effective in the removal of freckles. The use of lemon as a topical remedy is also effective in the treatment of psoriasis as well. Lemons are high in Vitamins A, B, C and D, magnesium and calcium, making it a strong antioxidant and mineral supportive fruit, providing excellent astringent benefits. Lemon juice promotes the contraction of skin tissue. Using an astringent after deep cleansing is best for helping to close off clean pores.

Vitamin A And Iron Supplementation

Leafy, green vegetables provide great nutritional support for the skin. Taking Vitamin A and iron supplements can help to make sure you are getting the most important nutritional components found in green leafy vegetables like broccoli. However, Vitamin A is also found in carrots, squash and cantaloupe as well. Fortified cereals, dairy products, liver and fish are also great sources of iron. Experts recommend 20,000 IU of iron and Vitamin A supplementation for helping to reduce acne and the scarring that is caused by acne.

Leeks are a part of the same genus as onions and garlic, known as allium. Leeks have been found to contain several important nutrients that support skin health. Leeks contain carbohydrates, proteins, calcium, potassium, phosphorous and Vitamins A, B and C. Eating leeks on an empty stomach has been found by experts to pride excellent nutritional support. Leeks have been used as an effective remedy for psoriasis and eczema, thus leading researchers to believe it is also effective for the reduction of acne breakouts as well. First grown by ancient Egyptians, the leek has steadily gained notoriety as being a healthy and highly beneficial vegetable for greater skin health.

Making sure you provide an adequate amount of antioxidants for your body’s defense is extremely important to all aspects of optimum health. Antioxidants strengthen the immune system and provide protection from free radical damage. Every disease is an indicator of inflammation in the body. Antioxidants help to reduce the free radicals advancing the stages of inflammation. Acne is considered to be a partial inflammatory skin disease, so it makes sense to include the nutrients in your diet every day for helping to reduce the free radicals that promote greater inflammation. Most acne sufferers are deficient in antioxidants like selenium, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Supplementing with these nutrients can help to settle the inflammatory response that causes acne. However, researchers have found the topical application of creams or lotions high in antioxidants like resveratrol, licochalcone and green tea is more effective than oral supplementation alone for acne.

Natural Ingredients For Acne And The Promotion Of Great Skin Health

Before you use any type of ingredient on your skin, discussing it with a dermatologist is best. Many people have allergies they may not be aware simply because they have not yet encountered a particular allergen in their life time. Many natural, herbal ingredients may be ones you have never used or been exposed to, so making sure it is safe for you is important before doing so. Also, it is important to know your skin type as well. Some remedies are specific for a certain skin type for being most beneficial.

Yogurt, Honey And Oats

One teaspoon of honey mixed with three or four tablespoons of plain yogurt and two tablespoons of dry oatmeal flakes make a soothing and deep cleansing facial mask. Honey has been used for years for many ailments due to its high antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Apply this mixture to the face, leaving it on for half an hour. Rinse well with cold water.

Organic Brands Of Yogurt

Organic yogurt applied directly on areas of acne can provide healing benefits because it contains high levels of naturally occurring alpha hydroxyl acids. Organic yogurt also provides the same soothing benefits as milk does for gentle exfoliation and skin cell rejuvenation. Using organic yogurt can also help to fade scars due to acne as well. Bear in mind people with milk allergies should avoid this remedy.

Yogurt Or Milk Mixed With Honey

The word being circulated in many skin care communities is about milk being a cause of acne. However, it is also important to note that a topical application of milk can be quite beneficial for the skin. Topical application of milk has been found to greatly reduce acne and improves over all skin tone. Research supports the topical use of milk for acne due to the hormones present in it. Milk hormones are beneficial to skin until they go enter the digestive system. This may be the reason Cleopatra was adamant about taking milk baths. Yogurt can also be used as a topical treatment for acne as well. Alpha hydroxyl acids in yogurt provide anti-inflammatory support for the skin cell structure. Yogurt also contains fats that deeply moisturize and hydrate skin as well.

Mix one tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of milk or yogurt. Be sure to let milk or yogurt come to temperature before mixing to avoid the shock to your skin that comes with cold. Put a layer of this mixture on your face. When the first layer is thoroughly dry, apply another layer over the first one, allowing it to dry as well. You can continue to stack layers in this way until you reach your desired thickness. Keep this mask on for at least ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. Once you have completely rinsed the ingredients off, gently rub a wash cloth over your face to remove the dead skin cells loosened by the mask. Be sure to moisturize your skin afterwards.

Benefits Of Oatmeal

Using oatmeal that has been cooked or soaked as a facial mask can help to reduce inflammation and redness associated with acne.  Adding a couple of tablespoons of honey to an oatmeal mask adds great antibacterial and antioxidant benefits. Bear in mind this remedy should be used as a complimentary treatment you use along with more effective, proven remedies for acne and not used as the only remedy. Mix oatmeal into a finer paste using a blender. Apply to the face, allowing drying for a minimum of fifteen minutes. Rinse with warm water the mask has completely dried.

Cinnamon And Honey

Honey possesses strong antibacterial properties that promote the destruction of bacteria on the skin that causes acne. Cinnamon bark has properties that have been found to be anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting. Mixing cinnamon and honey together increases skin benefits. Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon into a couple of tablespoons of honey until you have a paste. Apply this paste your face for experiencing the excellent healing benefits of these two synergistic ingredients. Leave the paste on the skin for ten minutes before gently rinsing it off with warm water.

Olive Oil And Tomatoes

Using only homemade tomato puree is important for gaining the greatest healing benefits of this remedy. Canned tomato paste contains additives and preservatives that can harm your skin, so avoid using it in your skin care remedies. Mix three or four tablespoons of homemade tomato puree into pure olive oil. Mix and rub on the face for fifteen minutes. Acne pustules and pimple will appear to have wilted until they disappear. Tomatoes are considered an antioxidant fruit containing high levels of Vitamins A, C and K and lycopene. Many medications used in the treatment of acne contain lycopene. In fact, placing a slice of tomato on the areas of acne troubling can help to promote healing and prevention of future outbreaks as well. Many people have experienced great acne healing benefits by applying mashed tomato pulp to their face on a regular basis. You may also experience acne healing by applying tomato slices to the skin after washing it natural oregano soap as well. Using tomato slices after washing with oregano soap provide antiseptic benefits, much in the same way some alcohol based astringents and toners claim they provide. Blending tomato and lemon together into paste for a facial mask can provide great antioxidant and antiseptic benefits also.

Healing And Soothing Steam Therapy

Steam has been used many years as a remedy for several minor ailments. Acne is one of the ailments steam can help to heal. Steam lowers the occurrence of acne breakouts by opening ski pores, allowing trapped bacteria and oil to flow out. Many people like to steam their face before using acne medications and remedies due to pores being open and clean. Important Information Regarding Alternative Medicine

Acne And Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used by Chinese people for centuries in the treatment of several ailments. Many women experiencing menstrual issues stand to benefit a great deal from acupuncture, especially for the acne that plagues many women during their child bearing years. Traditional Chinese alternative practitioners have used acupuncture in conjunction with herbal preparations for effectively reducing the occurrence of acne. One reason acupuncture is successful in the treatment of acne is due to impact it has on promoting healthy hormonal balance in the body. Research has proven the causes of menses related acne are due to hormone fluctuations.

Myths Surrounding Acne

Myth 1: Scrubbing the skin helps cure acne.

While cleansing the skin is important for good health, you should know that scrubbing only promotes greater irritation. Irritation actually attracts the free radicals that promote the occurrence of acne. Gently washing your face with your hands only twice daily can provide gentler cleansing with greater benefits. Bear in mind that acne is not caused by dirt in the pores. The bacteria created by dead skin cells that gets trapped by sebum is the reason acne pustules form in the pores.

Myth 2: Acne can be caused by sexual intercourse and masturbation.

Parents used this myth to help prevent pre-marital sex as far back as the seventeenth century. This myth has never been proven through research to hold any truth. However, many researchers and scientists have wondered if sex or masturbation can affect the increase of androgen sex hormones. Keep in mind androgens, especially testosterone, have been linked to the causes of acne in adolescents. Studies have shown that testosterones in males and females do not fluctuate far from normal levels during or after orgasmic arousal, thus also confirming that orgasm due to sex or masturbation does not contribute to acne in any way.

Myth 3: Sunlight cures acne.

Exposure to the sun can be beneficial, but only so for short periods of exposure. Fair skinned people can experience benefits for acne from sunlight for up to twenty minutes exposure. Darker skinned people can experience sunlight benefits for acne when exposed for no longer than thirty minutes. However, over exposure to the sun can cause serious skin irritation that speeds up the aging process and causes greater acne breakouts. Avoid getting sunburned and always wear sunscreen for additional skin protection.

Myth 4: Acne only affects teens.

While scientists and medical professionals are not clear about the reasons why, the numbers of adults experiencing acne is greater than ever before. In fact, statistics show that about fifty percent of adults, twenty five percent of that number being women, suffer with moderate to severe acne. However, the treatment is the same for both adults and teens.

Myth 5:  Acne has no cure.

Today, several drugs and natural remedies are available that have been proven to treat and cure acne. Isotretinoin, a popular drug prescribed for acne, has been found to curtail acne symptoms and does for long periods of time. These results occur in two out of three people taking isotretinoin. Discuss the use of isotretinoin with your physician about side effects and whether this treatment is good for you.

Myth 6: Dermatologists know all the details and causes of acne.

Unfortunately, this myth is not true. While dermatologists do have great knowledge about the several forms of acne, they do not know all the reasons it occurs. People suffering with acne should take the time to learn more about what acne is and what you can do about it at home on a daily basis. Providing healthy skin care on a regular schedule is important to prevent acne and many other uncomfortable skin diseases.

Myth 7:  Popping pimples is bad.

While popping a pimple may causes damage to the pore and cause permanent scarring, this is kind of damage only occurs when you pop pimples that do not have a white or yellow head on them. When pimples do not have white or yellow pus in the center, you could potentially harm your skin by pressing hard to get pus out that is too deep inside the pore. The best and safest way to pop a pimple is to wait until it exhibits pus and do so after a hot shower while the skin is most supple and compliant. When a pimple is popped correctly, it can help to start healing by releasing infectious pus. Do not pick at pimple during the healing process. Picking can cause scarring that is permanent.

Tips For Safely And Correctly Popping A Pimple

  • Clean a sharp sewing needle with alcohol.
  • Prick the top of the pimple in a gentle manner.
  • Cover your fingertips with clean tissue or sterile gauze.
  • Squeeze gentle, firm manner from either side of the pimple. A pimple that is ready to pop will do so easily. Stop squeezing when clear fluid or blood comes out. If you find you are getting nothing out after squeezing, the pimple is not ready to be popped.
  • Avoid continual squeezing or picking at a recently popped pimple. Leaving it alone to heal is always best to avoid greater risk of infection and scarring.
  • Do not attempt to squeeze a cyst or nodule that is painful and inflamed. Doing so can make these kinds of pimple a lot worse and it can cause severe scarring as well. Visiting a dermatologist is best for these kinds of acne issues. Your dermatologist can inject cortisone into the cyst or nodule for reducing swelling, redness and painful inflammation. Many dermatologists take patients on an emergency basis for treating these painful, severe pimples.

Controversial Ideas And Theories About Acne

Association Between Acne And Drugs

While solid evidence has not found supporting the effects of drugs on the skin, particularly about being a cause of acne, some people seem to feel there is a connection. Research studies are being done about the effects of MDMA, referred to on the street as ecstasy, marijuana and cocaine on the skin. these studies are being done based on how hormonal changes can cause acne.

Studies have found that marijuana does have a direct impact on the endocrine system. The endocrine system consists of glands like the thyroid and testes that produce hormones in the body. The effects of THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, can cause hormonal fluctuations, but these effects subside with continued use. While most evidence produced in marijuana studies is inconclusive, it is important to note men that use marijuana regularly have been found to have low sperm count. However, no evidence confirms marijuana being a cause of acne.

Cocaine’s Internal Impact

The estrogen and testosterone levels changed in animals and humans after cocaine was administered. Due to these changes in hormonal balance, many researchers wonder about cocaine helping to increase the occurrence of acne. In studies related to humans, evidence was discovered that cocaine does increase luteinizing hormones in female and male study participants. Researcher and professionals in the medical community do have profound evidence supporting how continual cocaine use does interrupt the female menstrual cycle.  Lab tests report that the size of testes in lab rats were reduced a great deal after cocaine was given to them. The same rats showed remarkable decreases in testosterone as well.

Ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine, MDMA)

Studies involving lab rats produced supporting evidence about the effects of the drug ecstasy on testosterone levels.  After seven days of ecstasy administration, testosterone level showed reduced levels. GnRH mRNA levels were also found to lower with use of ecstasy as well. Human sample testing demonstrated a significant eight hundred percent (800) rise in cortisol while testosterone levels were also found to increase by seventy five (75) percent.

How Methamphetamine Use Affects The Skin

While no scientific research supports a direct link to methamphetamines and acne, it is important to know that many meth addicts do experience severe acne due to a picking phobia they experience that is directly cause by the drug. Called formication, users experience hallucinations of insects actually crawling beneath their skin. Most meth users are reported to have several skin lesions on their bodies due to picking. The constant irritation caused by picking at the skin creates the perfect environment for the development of acne.

Alcohol And Acne

Evidence has not been found to support the direct impact of alcohol on the formation of acne. However, studies have been done proving how alcohol can affect hormone levels. Since acne is directly caused by hormone activity, many scientist and medical professionals feel alcohol can be indirectly related to the occurrence of acne. Two important studies produced evidence that showed increases in testosterone and estrogen in men and women after consuming alcohol. However, testosterone levels were found to actually decrease in male soldiers that were physically active. More research needs to be done in order to determine if alcohol can cause acne.

How Dairy Products  Relate To Acne

Not a whole lot of evidence is available linking dairy products as a direct cause of acne. However, the presence of hormones in milk raises questions about the effect of dairy products on the skin, thus instigating studies being continued to learn more. The insulin-like growth factor, commonly referred to as IGF-1, was found through scientific research to increase sebum oil production in skin pores. It is a proven fact as well that IGF-1 is responsible for stimulating cell production in the body. Researchers have proven that the bacterium in skin pores is created by dead skin cells. It would make sense that the over production of cells can also increase the number of dead skin cells as well. Too much sebum production has been recorded as a direct cause of acne, thus leading one to believe dairy products can also cause acne. Study results could be available in the future that confirms this theory about dairy products and their impact on acne.

Precursors to male hormones, androgens, are also in milk. However, in order for these forerunners of androgens to convert into useable male hormones in the body, certain enzymes are necessary. The enzymes that promote this important hormonal conversion are found to be abundant in skin pores. Since male hormones are found to have a direct link to acne development, it stands to reason this conversion in skin pores can create a greater risk of acne. Skim milk seems to produce greater effects that lead researchers to believe some aspects of milk do impact the development of acne.

Iodine can cause a condition described as acneiform eruption. However, it does take large doses of iodine to produce this side effect. Scientists do know that milk contains iodine content due to the solution of iodine used for teat sterilization before cows are milked. So far, no conclusive evidence has been produced that the iodine in milk can cause acneiform eruption.

Facts About Glycemic Index And Glycemic Load

Evidence has not been found linking acne to low glycemic diets nor to the glycemic load surrounding dietary food choices. Glycemic index is a numerical reference for foods that create spikes in levels of glucose. Glycemic load explains how certain amounts of glycemic index referenced food choices affect blood glucose.

Most people today eat foods every day that are considered high glycemic foods. Some common high glycemic foods eaten daily are white rice, potatoes, white bread and sugar. These foods have been found to elevate insulin levels that can cause other health problems like:

IGF-1(Insulin –Like Growth Factor 1)

When insulin levels in the blood increase, the levels of IGF-1 do so as well. Higher levels of IGF-1 cause greater cell growth. Scientists and researchers think the cells in the skin pores also experience over production, thus leading to more dead cells accumulation that causes clogged pores. Greater levels of IGFR-1 also have a direct influence on greater production of sebum oil, another factor that leads to clogged pores. Pores clogged with dead skin cells and oil turn into acne pustules.

IGFBP-3(Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein)

Higher insulin levels cause lower levels of IGFBP-3 in blood. IGFBP-3 is responsible for IGF-1 regulation, preventing IGF-1 from cellular receptor binding from occurring. When levels of IGFBP-3 become low, the levels of IGF-1 grow higher, causing greater cell growth that can lead to more dead cells skin pores. Lowered levels of IGFBP-3 also mean a reduction in retinoid benefits. Retinoid helps to prevent the overgrowth of cells.

Because of the control insulin has over hormones in the body, greater insulin levels means increased levels in some hormones as well. High androgen levels are found in people experiencing high levels of insulin, thus increasing the risk of acne due to hormonal imbalance.

Studies done by Australian researchers concluded that participants maintain a low glycemic diet did experience less acne symptom over a twelve week period. However, these results cannot be clearly determined due to fact participants also lost weight during those twelve weeks. Researchers have proven that healthy weight loss can also reduce the symptoms of acne. Because of this fact, the Australian study results are considered at this time to be inconclusive.

The Impact Of Caloric Intake On The Skin

Dieting and losing weight has been found to reduce acne in many dieters. One reason for this lowered occurrence is due to how calories affect the levels of androgen hormones like testosterone. People that eat a high caloric diet have higher levels of androgens. Due to the evidence that had been found about the hormonal causes of acne, scientist believe eating too many calories can cause greater instance of acne breakouts. In fact, in regions of the world that people are starving, the occurrence of acne is nearly non-existent. While no one should starve themselves to reduce acne, it is evidence proving that overall caloric intake can affect hormone levels and the development of acne symptoms.

Fatty Or Oily Foods And Acne

The human body requires fat to maintain optimum health and proper functioning. Many people wonder about the impact fats, saturated, unsaturated or hydrogenated, have on the development of acne symptoms. For now, no evidence has been produced about how dietary fats relate to acne. However, researchers do know that some consumed fats are used in the production of sebum oil. At least one study showed that people eating high fat diets did have a greater occurrence of oily skin. Further evidence has not been found or published about fats and acne. Sebum structure is being more closely studied for learning its connection to dietary fats.

Lifestyle Changes Can Help Reduce Acne

Maintaining a regular skin care routine is extremely important to clear up and prevent acne breakouts. Cleansing with an antiseptic soap in the mornings and in the evenings before you go to sleep is important. Always apply a moisturizer after thorough, gentle cleaning. Using an antibiotic cream in the evenings in place of a moisturizer is wise. Remember to wear sunscreen when you go out in the sun and be sure to use hypoallergenic cosmetics that are oil free.

Exercising on a regular schedule is good for all of you. When you work out, endorphins are released that help to relieve stress. Reducing stress also helps to lower sebum production that can lower the risk of acne breakouts. Vigorous exercise helps you sweat. Sweating can help to unclog and clean out pores of dead skin cells.  Exercising can help to provide many great health benefits in addition to lowering your risk of acne.  Maintaining a healthy weight can also help to reduce acne as well.

Avoid touching your face when possible. Leaning on your hands or picking at pimples can increase the numbers of bacterium in skin pores. Your fingers and hands carry around a great deal of bacterium that can create infection in skin pores, thus leading to severe acne issues. Talking on the phone can be a reason you experience more acne due to the sebum and bacteria that may left on the phone by you and other users of that particular phone. Taking the time to wipe off your phone receiver before using it could help you to avoid dealing with an acne breakout.

Showering every day can help to reduce the bacteria levels on your skin and can also help to wash away dead skin cells and excess oils. Using a mild skin cleanser is best. Be sure to use shampoos that are formulated to control the oil in your hair. Always make sure to shower directly after exercising. The sweat you produce while working out can wash dead skin cells out of pores. These dead skin cells can remain on your skin and reenter pores, causing acne.

Eating a well-balanced diet is essential for you to have radiant, healthy looking skin. Avoid eating processed foods because of their unhealthy fat and sodium content. Processed foods also contain additives and preservatives that can pile up in your system as toxins. You should also avoid food choices that are high in sugars. Keep in mind that foods and beverages containing high fructose corn syrup are extremely high in sugary content. Making sure eat as many of the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day is important to feel good and to look good as well.

Sleep is the best nurse you could ask for. Getting enough sleep is important for many reasons, one great one being the time your body needs for detoxification and true relaxation. Losing sleep means your skin cell structure has not had enough hours to complete the process of cell rejuvenation. Going to bed every night at the same time whenever possible is important for making sure you get in the eight hours of sleep your body requires for being healthy.

Learning how to handle stress is essential for living along, fruitful life. Reducing stress is also important for your skin to be healthy as well. Yoga, muscle massage and meditation are some great ways to let go of the stress that could take its toll on your skin.

The clothing you wear and the bedding you sleep on should be washed once weekly to prevent a build up dead skin cells on them. The pillow case that has not been washed could have enough dead skin cells on it to create a severe acne breakout.  The towel you used once or twice can also carry several dead skin cells that can find their way into the pores on your skin.

if you have a special occasion to attend and you are worried about the pimple on your face causing you embarrassment, visiting a qualified dermatologist for its treatment is best. Avoid squeezing the pimple because you risk making it look a lot worse by doing so.

Washing your hands before you touch your face can help a lot to reduce the transference of harmful bacteria to your pores. This is especially true when you are about to apply lotions or cosmetics to your face.

If you wear eyeglass, keeping them clean can help to reduce bacterial exposure for your face as well. Glasses can have sebum and dead skin cells build up in the same way as phone do.

Allowing your skin to breathe is essential to its good health. For this reason, avoid wearing tight clothing or accessories that constrict your skin’s ability to breath.

Never go to sleep with the day’s cosmetics still on your face. Also, use only oil free brands that lower the chances of increased clogged pores.

Keeping your hair clean and away from your face can help to reduce acne. Your hair collects oils that will help to clog skin pores, thus causing the formation of acne.

Prolonged sun exposure can cause the skin to produce more sebum, leading to more acne. You should also remember that some medications for acne cause greater sun sensitivity.

When shaving, especially on the face and neck, do so carefully with a clean razor is important. Using razors that are unclean can create serious acne breakouts. Wash over your face with warm water before putting shaving creams and lotions for better results with less irritation.

If you smoke, quitting can help to greatly reduce the occurrence of acne. Smoking creates an external source of free radicals. The smoke you inhale also creates even more free radicals inside your body. Free radicals can cause your skin to age and to experience greater acne breakouts. Smoking lessens the amount of oxygen in the blood as well, causing constriction that affects healthy blood flow to the skin, causing even greater damage. Smoking causes an inflammatory response by the body that can set up the perfect environment for several serious, even fatal diseases like cancer, including skin cancer.

Some studies have found that smoking does not increase acne, but instead helps to lower its occurrence. However, other studies have found that acne breakouts were much higher in smokers, both males and females. The bottom line about this discrepancy is important to note. Making a responsible choice about your health means you choosing to avoid tobacco in every form. Doing so can help you avoid the many disease and complications that come with smoking. Smoking causes serious damage to the skin and promotes faster aging. You can see proof of this in women that smoke. As they age, wrinkles begin to form around the mouth that comes from drawing on a cigarette. Men can also experience this type of premature wrinkling as well. Smoking diminishes the proteins necessary for a healthy, strong skin cell structure. If you smoke, you may see signs of sagging facial skin before your peers that do not smoke see them on their faces. Sagging facial skin in smokers is due to collagen proteins being destroyed by the chemicals in tobacco. While evidence has been produced that show smokers have less trouble with rosacea and mouth sores, these few benefits do not outweigh the serious risks associated with smoking. Nicotine on its own is not as threatening to your health. The smoke when tobacco burns is the deadly culprit of cigarette smoking.

Treatment Timing

For most acne treatment, benefits of noticeable clearer skin generally take at least four week to show. In some cases, results you can see can take yp to six weeks. Many acne sufferers give up after a few weeks because they think their treatments are not working. However, having patience and following your treatment routine carefully can and will produce results you want for your skin.

If you follow through an entire six weeks of acne treatment and you do not see any results, visiting your dermatologist is important for learning about your options for stronger treatments. People trying to get rid of acne should know there is no treatment that will produce perfect, blemish free skin. You may have a couple of spots even after treatment.

Does Acne Come Back After Treatment?

Unfortunately, acne can come back after you complete weeks or even months of treatment. For this reason, maintaining effective, healthy skin care is necessary. Your dermatologist can help you learn more about the steps you should take for keeping your skin clear and acne free after your treatment is done. For most people, extended acne skin care to keep acne breakouts at bay can last as long as five years. However, healthy skin care is important to keep up for your entire life.

Many people use benzoyl peroxide as a way to keep acne away after extended treatments are completed. Doing so on a long term basis means you choosing a low strength benzoyl peroxide formula. Topical retinoid medications are also good for acne prevention as well.

The long term use of some acne drugs is not recommended. Drugs like azelaic acid can cause serious side effects when used long term. Taking antibiotics orally can also produce unwanted side effects when used on a long term basis. For these reasons, your dermatologist ay recommended using medications like benzoyl peroxide or retinoid creams. Always follow the instructions closely for any type of acne medication. Using these kinds of medication in a way that is inconsistent with its instruction can cause your acne to get worse.

Acne Scar Removal

To date, the most effective procedure for the removal of scarring caused by acne is dermabrasion and laser light treatments. Learn more about whether you are a good candidate for this procedure by talking to a qualified dermatologist.
